Central Ohio River Valley Local Foods Guide
Welcome to the Central Ohio River Valley (CORV) Local Foods Initiative web-site. We've recently published the first CORV Eat Local Food Guide that covers Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana. The guide lists over 60 local farms and 30 farmers' markets in the Greater Cincinnati area. This version of our web-site is just a start, as we continue to build our effort and raise funds we hope to add more resources, information and features to the site.
The CORV Local Foods Initiative is a grassroots effort to connect local community members with local farmers and fresh, healthy, local food. We’re excited to be a part of the “eat local” movement and to provide this handy resource. Part of the joy of gathering the resources was getting to talk to some of the local growers. We’re also inviting you to get to know the growers, what they grow, and how. Let us know if we missed someone. These resources can be periodically updated on our website.
We hope the guide and this website not only answers questions about where to find local foods but raises some questions as well. Most importantly, why local? We actually have lots of different reasons and will have more information see the article, "A Dozen Reasons to Eat Local and Organic" in guide. Also check back as we will be sure to be adding information and resources on this subject!
Two other questions you may be asking: Why not call this the Greater Cincinnati Local Foods Guide? Eating local is a chance to think differently and tune into our foodshed, the Central Ohio River Valley, which crosses political boundaries. What is local? For the purposes of this guide and getting it done, we consider a 50 mile region in every direction from downtown Cincinnati; others talk about a 100 mile region. What do you think? These resources are on our website where we can more regularly update information.
Thanks to all those who helped get this guide together, especially to Enright Ridge Urban Ecovillage for being our project mentor and to Community Friends Meeting of Cincinnati for providing significant grant support. Now it’s in your hands. Consider taking the local foods pledge and then join us in September (the 21st) for our Eat Local CORV fundraiser at the Civic Garden Center. Eat, enjoy, share!
