About the Central Ohio River Valley Local Foods Initiative

The Central Ohio River Valley Local Foods Initiative is a grassroots effort to educate our community about the value of locally and sustainably grown food, as well as to connect local community members with local growers/farmers and markets.

In this age of fast food, factory farms, and huge grocery stores that treat food as a mere commodity, we envision individuals and groups working together to create a year around, vibrant, ecologically friendly, and accessible local food economy where food is a gift of the land.

Mission Statement:

Educate people, connect eaters and growers, and promote a vibrant, ecologically friendly, and sustainable local food economy in the Central Ohio River Valley.

History:

At a fall 2007 gathering at Imago Earth Center, a group of individuals concerned about the environment met to discuss local food resources. Several of these eaters of local foods saw the need for an all inclusive directory of resources. This desire brought community members, farmers and staff from local non-profits together to produce the 2008 Eat Local guide. A second edition was completed in the spring of 2009.  Enright Ridge Eco-Village, a nonprofit, mentors and financially houses the initiative.

Why Central Ohio River Valley?:

Eating Local is a chance to think differently and tune into our foodshed, the Central Ohio River Valley, which crosses political borders.

What is local?

For the purposes of the guide we have included growers located within a 50 mile radius of downtown Cincinnati or growers within a 100 mile radius of downtown Cincinnati that regularly sell within the 50 mile radius.
